How is this different from Buteyko Breathing Exercises?

Hello Ann , As Bradcliff practitioners we are all physiotherapists . Treating Breathing Pattern Disorders involves using our skills in all the areas of our training involving neurological ,physiological , respiratory and hands on movement analysis and facilitation. Occasionally there is a serious underlying disease process causing symptoms that needs recognising and referring to the appropriate medical specialist.
In other words effective treatment goes way beyond the nose and airways.Skills in movement analysis ,palpation ,relaxation are essential for effective treatment.
The Buteyko method is a strict breathing exercise regime which here in Australia is mainly taught in a group seminar format but will differ worldwide. The emphasis is on nasal breathing and reducing rate and volume. Any other treatment will depend on the professional background of the practitioner which again here in Australia does not have to be medically related. Elsewhere GP’s Nurses and Physiotherapists may also be Buteyko Practitioners.
I hope this helps! Obviously you will find out more about the Buteyko method from their website.

Hi Anne. There are some similarities, which are common to almost all breathing practises, of nose – diaphragm (tummy) breathing, and we certainly agree that overbreathing (hyperventilating) alters carbon dioxide levels detrimentally and this can produce a multitude of physiological changes and unpleasant symptoms. Our key point of difference is that we go straight to normal, regular breathing rates and a smooth transition from inhale to exhale rather than promoting breath holding. In the clinic I often observe people unknowingly breathing with a chaotic mix of breath holding, shallow catch up breaths or sighing, followed by a pause, and muscle tension from the unsettled pattern… we don’t want to manipulate the breath further to unusual patterns, we want to restore normal, gentle, physiologically balanced breathing. This addresses the carbon dioxide imbalance and also helps retrain a functional breathing pattern. Interestingly I read a Buteyko book recently, published circa 2000, which had moved away from the sustained max breath hold and was moving more towards what we do – efficient, appropriate regular breathing. hope this helps
